Discovery Guides

Discovery Guides

The Discovery Guides at Scott Arboretum & Gardens are fun and educational self-guided booklets designed to help children explore nature throughout all four seasons. Each Discovery Guide introduces young adventurers to new plants and landscapes for exploration. Children are encouraged to make observations, use their senses, and create nature notes throughout their visit. Collect all four seasonal Discovery Guides for the ultimate adventure.

Winter

The Winter Discovery Guide showcases hollies, the inside of a tree, and the unique witchhazel plant. Children are encouraged to explore the James R. Frorer Holly Collection, the Pinetum, and the Terry Shane Teaching Garden.

Spring

The Spring Discovery Guide features activities around early blooming flowers such as hellebores and crocuses, the exquisite cherry blossoms, and the many stages of peony blooms. Children are encouraged to visit the Metasequoia Allée, Cherry Border and Collection, and the Tree Peony Collection.

Summer

The Summer Discovery Guide highlights our colorful roses; pollinators such as bees, butterflies and hummingbirds; and our wide variety of hydrangeas. Children are encouraged to pop into the Dean Bond Rose Garden, the Scott Entrance Garden, and the Hydrangea Collection.

Fall

The Fall Discovery Guide spotlights our meadow habitats, features a leaf detective activity, and teaches about a variety of tree seeds. Children are encouraged to visit the Whittier Meadow, the Scott Outdoor Amphitheater, and the Pinetum.
