Whew! Hurricane Sandy
Whew! Swarthmore College and the Scott Arboretum reopened today to minor damage from Hurricane Sandy. After two days of emergency closure and 4.5 inches of rain, we only lost one major tree. Most of campus was only littered with small branches and leaf debris.
The one large tree we did lose was a large sugar maple outside of Ashton House, the college guest house. At this time, it appears to not have caused damage to the college house itself. See a collection of storm images on our Facebook page.
Gardeners have been working to clear pathways and garden spaces of debris for visitors, students, faculty, and staff. While our maple collection is largely defoliated, there is still wonderful fall color, striking berries, and tantalizing blooms in the garden. Come visit and relieve your cabin fever.
Our thoughts and well wishes go out to those still struggling with the effects of the storm. A big thank you to emergency responders who helped us all weather the storm safely.
