Plants of the Week – February 27

Edgeworthia chrysantha ‘Nanjing Gold’ is in bloom! This particular plant receives the benefit of building protection on three sides and a sunny easterly exposure. Fragrance is an added bonus. Chuck Hinkle, Garden Supervisor, has tucked a variety of choice ephemeral gems throughout the Harry Wood Garden. Adonis amurensis is one such treasure. Buttercup-yellow blooms top finely dissected foliage. Many cultivars with incredible colors have been developed in Japan. Sadly, choices are limited in North America. Photo credit: J. Coceano

A white color scheme helps brighten the shady Metasequoia Allee.  Even in winter, the trees, coupled with buildings on either side, reduce light levels. Fitting into the white color palette are numerous Helleborus ‘Snow Bunting’. Abundant nodding white flowers defy winter and brighten dim corners of the garden. Photo credit: J. Coceano

Osmanthus are evergreen shrubs with many virtues. Osmanthus heterophyllus ‘Goshiki’, planted by the Ben West House, sports green leaves splattered with dabs of white, gray-green, and yellow-green markings. The Japanese translation of ‘Goshiki’ is “five colors”. Consider this compact shrub for any full to partially shaded area. Photo credit: J. Coceano
