Plants of the Week: May 9

When possible, plant Allium aflatunense ‘Purple Sensation’ in mass.  Numerous violet-purple flowers give the impression of a single baseball-size flower on a 20 to 30 – inch stem.  Ornamental onions are reliable bloomers for sunny, well-drained areas.

Thousands of handkerchief-like bracts dangle from a Davidia involucrata planted along Whittier Place.  The upper bract averages 3 to 4 inches long while the lower bract often measures nearly 7 inches.  Patience is required as the dove-tree can be slow to flower.  The floral display more than makes up for the wait!  Davidia involucrata ‘Sonoma’ is scheduled for sale at the 2011 Scott Associates Plant Sale.

Calycanthus x raulstonii ‘Hartlage Wine’ is the result of crossing the American and Chinese allspice.  Rich burgundy blossoms begin in late spring and continue throughout the summer.  Yellow fall color adds additional interest.  ‘Hartlage Wine’ will be available at the 2011 Scott Associates Plant Sale.

Cornus Celestial ™ ‘Rutdan’ boasts numerous flowers and disease resistant foliage.  The specimen near Papazain Hall is covered in overlapping white bracts. Celestial ™ averages 20-25 feet in height and is part of the Stellar® series.
