Gardens and Tonic: Hidden Gems: Marian Coffin and the Gardens at Gibraltar

March 24, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

FREE

While researching for Marian Coffin Gardens at Gibraltar, an Images of America book, Jules Bruck and Erin Fogarty pieced together stories of local interest about one of the most prominent female landscape architects of the early 20th century. In this talk, Bruck presents the life and times of Marian Coffin (1876-1957) and the history of her impressive feats of garden design with a particular focus on Gibraltar in Wilmington, Delaware.

Jules Bruck, RLA is Professor and Director of Landscape Architecture at the University of Delaware, where she teaches advanced studios and courses in creativity, design process, field sketching, and ecological planting design. She is a registered landscape architect and a SITES Accredited Professional (AP). In April 2018, she co-founded the Coastal Resilience Design Studio and helped to launch the Coastal Observer online application for citizen scientists interested in documenting changes to the coastal environment. In 2021, she became the Director of the UD’s Mangone Climate Science and Policy Hub. As a board member and garden chair of Preservation Delaware, she oversees the Marian Coffin Gardens at Gibraltar and recently co-authored an Images of America book of the same name. Jules has a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University.
