Excursion: Glenstone Museum – Art, Architecture, and Nature

 Glenstone seamlessly integrates art, architecture, and nature into a serene and contemplative environment. The art collection comprises iconic examples of modern and contemporary art that represent pivotal shifts in the perception and understanding of 20th and 21st century art. These works are presented in a series of refined indoor and outdoor spaces designed to facilitate meaningful encounters for visitors. The nearly 300-acre landscape includes an 18,000-square-foot Water Court and outdoor sculptures throughout paths, trails, streams, meadows, and forests. Highlights of the outdoor sculptures include Jeff Koons’ Split-Rocker (2000), a spectacular planted form that towers over 37 feet high and features over 50,000 flowering plants, and Andy Goldsworthy’s Clay Houses (Boulder-Room-Holes) (2007), a series of three site-specific structures commissioned for Glenstone. Indoors, Room 7 of the Pavilions provides a calm, quiet space to look out over a framed view of the landscape. 

Our visit will begin with a tour from Paul Tukey, Director of Environmental Stewardship, who will provide an overview of the horticultural and sustainability practices at Glenstone. After this tour, you will have time to explore the grounds and indoor exhibit spaces at your own pace. Lunch will be on your own at either the indoor Cafe or indoor/outdoor Patio and is not included in the price. A sample menu can be viewed here  and is updated seasonally. Travel will be by coach bus with Scott Arboretum staff.

Accessibility: Glenstone is expansive and to explore the outdoor sculptures requires walking 2-3 miles with a total elevation change of 100 feet. Many areas of the outdoor trail are not shaded. If you have questions about this trip and accessibility, please call us at 610-328-8025.
