Plants of the Week: September 15

Simply reading North Creek Nurseries description of Bouteloua gracilis ‘Blonde Ambition’ is enough to make one pine after the dainty yet durable grass: “Where low maintenance meets garden whimsy, ‘Blonde Ambition’ is sure to turn heads. Airy, chartreuse flowers float horizontally amidst blue-green foliage from mid-summer into fall. Seed heads extend the season providing unique winter appeal. Extremely cold hardy and adaptable to various soil types, use in sweeps for a dramatic effect. The strong, consistent variegation on Eleuthrococcus sieboldianus ‘Variegatus’, green leaves with white margins, shines in the shade cast by Parrish Hall and neighboring trees.  Eleuthrococcus sieboldianus ‘Variegatus’, also known as beauty briar, is one tough plant capable of handling deep, dry shade. Spines protruding along the stems help further endorse the tough plant attitude. Spines encourage browsing deer to select other dining options and persuade trespassers to find alternate routes.  Photo credit: J. Coceano

Garden Locations: Behind Parrish Hall near Metasequoia Allee

“Excuse me. Can you please tell me the name of the orchid growing over here?” Such a question is asked frequently in September when Tricyrtis begins to bloom. While not an orchid, Tricyrtis, or toad lily, bears intricate blooms neatly lined along arching stems. Upward facing white flowers are streaked and splotched with flecks of raspberry-purple.  Despite unknown parentage, Tricyrtis ‘Sinonome’ is considered by some to be the best due to its clean foliage and long vase life. Plant in partial shade. While plants bear some degree of drought tolerance, prolific flowering occurs when plants are kept moist. Photo credit: J. Coceano
