Travels at Twelve: Ilona Ontscherenki: Escape from New Jersey! A Month in Japan after Hurricane Sandy

After still not having power two weeks post Hurricane Sandy, Ilona Ontscherenki struck out with just a carryon for a month-long journey through four islands of the Japanese archipelago. She’ll share her impressions of both cities and countryside, cuisine and culture, and, of course, the landscape (spanning Zones 6-10) of this endlessly fascinating country.

Travels at Twelve is an informal way to share what has been seen and discovered in various gardens and natural spaces throughout the world.

Registration is free but required. Participants must have Zoom downloaded on their computer and be comfortable using it. The webinar link will be included in the confirmation email received after registering online.

Ilona crossed over from a career as an economist to an avocation in horticulture and credits this to an expensive landscape project that inspired her to learn more about the plants on which she was spending so much money. She now gives talks for the Rutgers Master Gardener program and for the Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, where she also manages their popular annual plant sale. She has taken inspiration for her fundraising efforts from the marvelous sales held by the Scott Associates.
